When is Matariki?
Matariki is the Māori name for the constellation of stars, as well as the celebration, that signals the Māori New Year. The constellation is also known as the Pleiades or theSeven Sisters.
Te Ara: the Encyclopedia of New Zealand  has a great range of New Zealand information, including Matariki. To find out all about Matariki, follow this pathway:
  1. From the homepage homepage find the story Earth, Sea and Sky, and click on it.
  2. Now click on astronomy, which is the study of stars.
  3. Now you can click on Matariki - Māori New Year.
  4. Don't forget that you can click on read the full story for more information.
You can also check out images and media to do with Matariki on Te Ara. When you are on the Matariki page, click on the tab called Images and Media for a picture of the Matariki stars. There is also a video you can watch which is all about the legend of Matariki.
The Māori Language Commission has an official page for Matariki, explaining why it is an important part of New Zealand culture. This page also has all the dates when Matariki has appeared or will appear, all the way up to 2020!

HOT TIP: We like these sites because they’re either from a government organisation (Ministry or Council) OR a reputable organisation. You can tell this by their web address – they have either .org or .govt in their address. They’re also New Zealand sites, so relevant for us.
