"If you want to be a great writer - read!" Kate De Goldi

"If you want to be a great writer - read "

Just one gem of advice from multi talented writer Kate De Goldi.  Her visit to Victory Primary School at the beginning of the term was inspiring and a highlight of the year. She shared many more gems of wisdom and advice for budding writers. Her ability to reach the very youngest of our students as well as our seniors ensured complete engagement - She encouraged the children to "write about what they knew - their family, friends, the things around them..." and then she showed everyone her much treasured first story written in class at age 5. Her story was simply about her sister and a slide. ....  and everyone lived happily ever after!"  I think seeing this 'start point' -Kate's very first efforts at writing proved hugely motivating and inspiring for the students.

Kate sent  a lovely card thanking everyone at Victory..."the wonderful teachers and Principal and the dear Victory students"

When books come alive!

The Guinness Book of World Records has always been popular with students. I remember spending hours in my school library pouring over the interesting, bizarre and amazing records, and being freaked out and fascinated all at the same time.

Fast forward a couple of decades to the 2013 edition and students are still captivated by the crazy but true world of humans and animals.

This year there is a special augmented reality feature - Download a free app and make your page come to life with 3D animations.

Hold the iPad over the page, and compare your height to the world's shortest man or hold the iPad over another page and  Splash - out projects a great white shark!

How much is that pile of books? Term 3 Library competition

This term our students must guess the cost of a pile of books!

Ariana and Willow in deep concentration

Only a few clues have been shared - such as paperbacks costing less than hardback; how many books there are in the pile; and that the pile includes a mixture of New Zealand and international authors.

Judging by the answers received to date, the students are in for a big surprise!

As well as being a fun activity, it's also a subtle way of showing students the true cost of library books.

Reading transforms kids' lives - David Hill

Victory School Library had the pleasure of hosting multiple award winning author David Hill.

David enthralled our Middle and Senior syndicates with his personal insight into the "stories" behind the stories.

His article published in the Herald was a timely reminder to parents, teachers, librarians and everyone who deals with kids :

"Read to your kids and you'll transform their lives".

Congratulations David on your latest win

Our New Librarian

Victory Primary School has a new librarian. Her name is Kathy Graham but the students call her Whaea Kathy.

Whaea Kathy likes all kinds of books. "I love flicking through the new picture books. Especially when they arrive all shiny and new," she said. "I also love to revisit old favourites again and again. I never tire of a good story. One of my favourite authors is Michael Morpurgo. He writes brilliantly. I can't wait to share his stories with students."

Whaea Kathy is excited about David Hill visiting Victory Primary School. "Its a wonderful opportunity for everyone to see and hear a famous new Zealand author, ask him questions and find out what inspires his writing." she said.

Year 6 student, Kyan said " I think the new librarian is lovely and will be a wonderful help to the school".
